The shooting guard quandary

Keith Bogans is Chicago’s starting shooting guard.

Bogans is averaging 3.9 PPG while shooting 38.3 percent from the field, 30.1 percent from three-point range and 56.3 percent from the free throw line. His Player Efficiency Rating is 7.7. According to John Hollinger’s reference guide, that puts him somewhere between “Definitely Renting” and “The Next Stop: D-League.”

By the numbers, both Kyle Korver (8.8 PPG and 41 percent on threes) and Ronnie Brewer (6.2 PPG and 53 percent from the field) are better. But Korver is weak on defense and Brewer is a poor outside shooter.

It’s obvious the Bulls need a shooting guard.

K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune writes:

“Is help coming? Rumors persist that general manager Gar Forman is actively looking for an upgrade at shooting guard, but sources said reports of talks with the Nuggets regarding J.R. Smith weren’t accurate. Players such as Richard Hamilton and Stephen Jackson would appear to have prohibitive long-term deals. The Bulls have scouted Rockets guard Courtney Lee, who is well-regarded for his defense and toughness. But even if talks became serious, he’s a 37.9 percent career 3-point shooter and might represent only a minor upgrade.”

There’s also been talk about dealing for O.J. Mayo and J.J. Redick.

Whatever the case, it’s clear that the lack of a legit SG — and not Joakim Noah’s thumb surgery — is the biggest factor preventing the Bulls from taking their place among the league’s true championship contenders.

Will management make a deal? Possibly. Although I suspect, if anything happens, it won’t happen until the trade deadline.

It would be nice to have a shooting guard who can guard and shoot. I think Smith would be a nice upgrade, he plays hard, is athletic and can shoot from anywhere- although his basketball IQ is at Tyrus level I would like to see the Bulls take a shot on him. If Denver is really looking to move him, we might be able to swing a deal for him and Carter, in exchange for JJ, CJ and Bogans.

Reddick cannot come to the Bulls because of the offer sheet for one year, so I think he is out of the picture. I am skeptical that we could work out a deal with Memphis for Mayo. They would want Taj and a first-rounder, plus probably JJ and Bogans to match salaries. We are not that deep in the front court; I don’t think we can afford to lose Taj.

finally they truly are speaking of what i have been saying for quite some time we need and have needed a shooting guard b4 the season started someone who can hit shots outside consistantly not just pass or drive the ball a true scorer lots of options out there but our bulls may need to make a big splash in a trade not sure of the combo and for who but lets just say we have everyone on the team accept boozer Rose and noah that can be put into any trades sry T gibs and Deng but deng plays too soft sometimes i like hm but we need a hard nose player all the time and
T gibs your a great pick up but may be odd man out if we can swing the right trade scenereo just depends on whats on the table and what offers may be out there we got picks to boot to go along with the trade heck thro in next yrs too if it gets us what we need now we are young enough and will be good enough to survive till yr after on picks get it done now pax Rose boozer need help now not later…….

if we want a legit SG, we have to deal Gibson…BOTTOM-LINE…personally, i’m sick of CHI acquiring these run-of-the-mill SG’s…championship contenders make bold moves, and that means dealing some of your good players…Gibson is good, but guess what, we have Boozer…yes, Boozer is an injury-prone, but it’s worth the risk to see what this team can do with an upgrade at SG and a healthy Boozer, Rose, and Noah.

First off, it is obvious that we need to get Bogans off of the floor. He is a nightmare. I think that out of the Brewer/Korver argument, the answer is obviously Brewer. Korver gives the second unit an offensive boost; the first unit already has the offense on lock down. Anyway, Brewer is really starting to find his rhythm offensively. Maybe he can’t shoot threes, but he can hit that 15 foot jumper.

I hadn’t even thought about Lee as someone that could come to Chicago. I think that he would make a really nice addition, assuming that we wouldn’t have to give up as much. He can shoot, is a though defender, doesn’t have a huge contract, and has some major athleticism.

    How about Shane Battier?

You need to trade something in order to get something. If it takes to trade Taj for a legitimate solution at the shooting guard position, then so be it. Acquiring OJ for Taj works for both sides.

    Bulls Get:
    G OJ Mayo
    F Darrell Arthur

    Grizzlies Get:
    F Taj Gibson
    F James Johnson
    G Keith Bogans
    Bulls First Round Pick

Flip21 – i agree with your thoughts, but your offer seems to be giving up too much….but that’s besides the point…we do need to give up some goods in order to get some in return (tell that to LA when they got Pau 😛 ) …CHI needs to improve the SG position, and our weakness is obviously not at PF.

heck, i still think dealing Deng for Melo would’ve been huge because Melo will give you consistency, but we know that deal is not happening now….consistency is lacking at certain positions, and it’s glaring at the SG….time to make bold moves, or else CHI will just be the Jazz of the east…1st and 2nd round visits in the playoffs.

Flip21, I would be for that trade. Not saying it is the right thing to do but I think we do need a SG that can shoot the 3 and play defense Mayo fits the bill. Not to mention his ability to create off the dribble if needed. Adding in Arthur helps ease the pain of losing Gibson. Overall, I think our team would improve with your proposed trade. Anyone else have any thought on this trade idea??

Bulls would have to include 2 picks to get Mayo, if ya ask me

    J December 29, 2010 at 9:55 pm #

That sounds like a good trade to me. Mayo seems to be a smart player and would probably fit well into the system and under that trade we would still have the brewer/korver combo.

I have been saying for a long time the bulls should try to get O. J. mayo less thus now his name comes up alot the saleries might be the maine thing that may prevent this from happening but not sure the bulls need to see if they can make it work somehow mayo is the only guard out there i want to see come to the bulls that is willing or able .. no lee from the rockets they can keep him too short its mayo or wait till the draft we are not getting mello that is almost a done deal so we need to make a big move it requires guts and a risk but the reward could be a big pay off…. Go get Mayo now offer bogans jj and T gibs in a trade for him no picks less we keep T gibs or if we can keep T gibs send brewer in the trade he is ok but to me he is under achieving with out team as of now.. no tme for that send him to the grizz if they want him for mayo…

Whom ever thinks our team does not need a solid 2 guard is not watching anygames I heard something about ben gordan mayby he is kinda odd man out on the pistons team his contract is big not sure if we want to take on such a big contract less the pistons eat some of it , also the bulls need to put some offer out there n see who bites at it two first picks brewer and bogans combo and either or kover or T gibs to get the guard they want see who bites at it might be suprised that is alot on the table the sharks will circle might think its blood in the water and someone take a bite at it but we need to see what sticks once we thro it out there time to make the team even better than it isthe experiiment is over might even want to play JJ a lil more he is very aggressive and size and body when he plays under control he has a nice game need to find out how much talent he has he was a big pick and hardly played time to either use him or lose him one or thwe other…..

^^ 98% agree. Keep Gibson send draft picks Bogans and JJ for Oj

Agree with C Lo the great, about not giving up Taj. Send them draft picks instead. Get Mayo

OJ Mayo = Ben Gordon: no defense, undersized, volume/streaky shooter.

If only Rose could be cloned…

  16. Flip21 December 30, 2010 at 3:17 pm #

I also think trading for Stephen Jackson is a good idea. His contract is not that bad, and he fits the type of shooting guard we need. A big guard who can shoot, defend, and create. He is Joe Johnson lite in my opinion. Plus trading for him does not require giving up Taj, since the Bobcats have Tyrus in the long term and Bobcats pick. However, they might have to give up Brewer and Asik for S-Jax, along with JJ. But I would do that trade as well if it means having a starting line up where all starters are in the top 10 in their respective positions.

    Bulls Get:
    G Stephen Jackson

    Bobcats Get:
    G Ronnie Brewer
    C Omer Asik
    F James Johnson
    Bulls Future First Round Pick

Guys like Stephen Jackson and OJ Mayo are volume scorers that make terrible companions to Derrick Rose, who is most effective when shooting a lot. Ronnie Brewer is a perfect companion to Rose, plays good defense, shoots efficiently, doesn’t turn the ball over, and is a good teammate overall. Where’s the problem?

I’m a huge bulls fan and you guys have your heads in the right place, however some of your scenarios are not well thought out. Re: Charlotte deal… There is no way the bobcats would agree to that deal, and even if they did, do you plan on playing kurt thomas 48 mins a night? Re: any deal that includes Taj gives away a not only our 6th man, but also a cost-controlled young asset. I know everyone wants a bold move, but in the nba where bad contracts can set teams back years, you have to be patient. We don’t have to go all-in, so to speak, this year, but stay well positioned and flexible for the future.

McHale helped his old team out by trading Garnett, maybe Michael will give us a break and agree to that deal. I would love to see Captain Jack going nose to nose against DWade in the playoffs.

HaHa… True, and Jerry West traded Gasol to the Lakers… I definitely wouldn’t complain about getting Jackson, especially at only 8 mil a year. I’m just leery of giving up too much in some of the other deals mentioned.

  21. Inception December 31, 2010 at 3:27 am #

MJ is too competitive to give a softy deal to CHI…come on, you guys should know that by now.

  22. Flip21 December 31, 2010 at 6:26 am #

That’s true Inception, but remember he was generous enough to give us a future first round pick. But if we miss out on Melo, Mayo, and S-Jax; I say trade for Courtney Lee. He comes in cheap and is able to shoot, defend, and create. I think under Thibs system he’ll thrive. He’s another version of Arron Afflalo.

    Bulls Get:
    G Courtney Lee

    Rockets Get:
    F James Johnson
    Bulls Future First Round Pick

You know how there is a tag for “Please Stop Shooting Tyrus”? Can we get one for Keith? I’d really like a drunken Matt McHale throwing up a New Years “Please Stop Shooting Ketih” post.

Bulls should get it done without trading Gibson, or wait until the offseason for a better deal. I don’t think this team can go all the way with Mayo at any rate. Bulls are going to ascend in steps and should keep their young core. I wonder what’s been bugging Gibs offensively lately?. A triumph this year would be the East Final.
