And the 12th roster spot goes to Keith Bogans

According to Sam Smith of Bulls.com: “The Bulls Friday added another perimeter factor to their roster by reaching agreement on a two-year deal withformer Spurs starter Keith Bogans, NBA sources confirmed. The deal is estimated at about $2.5 million, with the second year not fully guaranteed until next summer. Thus, the Bulls still have salary cap room left and flexibility and are expected to remain in trade discussions for another guard, perhaps Portland’s Rudy Fernandez.”

Well, I’m glad the Bulls maintained some cap room and a little flexibility after this deal, because I’m having a tough time getting excited about Bogans. In seven NBA seasons, he’s played for four different teams (the Bulls will be his fifth). He’s been traded three times and allowed to walk in free agency another three times.

For his career, Bogans has shot 39 percent from the field, 35 percent from downtown and 72 percent from the line. Last season, he shot 25 percent inside 10 feet, 25 percent from 10-15 feet and 31 percent from 16-23 feet. Last week, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said that the team’s top priority was finding another shooter. Those aren’t really a shooter’s numbers.

His career Player Efficiency Rating is 10.1, which according to one reference guide ranks somewhere between “scrounging for minutes” and “definitely renting.”

Moreover, Bogans has been in the playoffs only twice for a total of 18 games. And according to Basketball-Reference.com, his most significant NBA achievements are playing a full 82 games (in 2007-08) and ranking 8th in the league in turnover percentage for a single season (again in 2007-08).

Here’s ESPN’s John Hollinger’s scouting report on Bogans prior to the 2009-10 season: “Offensively, he can’t score unless he has a wide-open jumper. … Combined with how infrequently he shoots, few wings were as ineffective offensively. … Defensively, Bogans effectively checks 2s because he’s strong and gives a great effort, but his short arms and modest size limit his ability to stop bigger players. … Bogans brings two skills to the table: He’s a good defender and he’s a decent 3-point shooter. Beyond that, he has very little to offer — he’s hopeless off the dribble and doesn’t create for others or himself.”

Not exactly a rousing endorsement. Of course, Hollinger also referred to Bogansas tough, clever and hard-nosed. And those traits may be why he’ll be wearing a Bulls uniform during the upcoming season. According to Smith: “Bogans also has long been a favorite of new Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, who has been hopeful management would add Bogans for his defensive play, toughness and ability to hit a three-pointer. … His addition gives the Bulls a strong defensive presence and size on the perimeter with Brewer and the shooting of Korver.”

So with what may very well end up being their final acquisition of a pretty crazy offseason, the Bulls have added a player who brings some defense, toughness and the occasional three-pointer. On the one hand, I was hoping for something more. On the other hand, the Bulls are pretty deep right now and there weren’t going to be a lot of minutes to go around. From what I can determine, Bogans will do what he’s told without complaint. And despite his deficiencies, he apparently gives a team everything he’s got.

So in the final analysis, I guess the Bulls could have done worse in filling their last roster spot. Still, I’d feel better if Bogans could drill the three at a higher percentage.

We should have taken a chance on T-Mac or even Shaq if Bogans was going to be the end result.

Rudy must be on his way to Chicago cause Bogans can’t be the shooter that the Bulls staff has been talking about getting.

I’m still shocked we took K. Thomas over Boone, Shaq and other viable options.

I too am disappointed with the Bogans signing. Prior to Bogans signing, the Bulls needed the following:

Scoring gaurd who can hit the 3
    Point gaurd
    Forward/center

Bogans isn’t any of the above. IMO, Bogans signing also might be an indication that Rudy Fernandez is NOT coming to the Bulls, because if he was then Bogans would not be signed. If Rudy Fernandez is acquired, then there would be log jam at shooting gaurd unless Bogans is designated as a back up point guard and in which case Bogans is not a all a good point gaurd. Bogans is a shooting gaurd who doesn’t shoot and plays defense. Bulls already have Brewer that can do anything Bogans can do but so much better except hit a 3 every other couple of games. At any rate, I don’t like this signing at all. I would have settled for Roger Mason, Jr.

I doubt Rudy is coming to CHI…he’d have to be ok with the possibility of coming off the bench…he prob will sign with a weaker team and start…Bogans is nothing to get excited about…the players i’m more concerned with are rose, boozer, noah, brewer, deng, gibson, and korver….that’s the core which will make or break the team.

Like you said Matt…there are only so many minutes to go around. The reason we aren’t getting Rudy, or Shaq, or TMac or any of those guys is because this is our TWELFTH MAN! The only playing time he should see is the end of blow outs, anything else and we are in serious trouble. The last thing you need out of a 12th man is a character issue, a guy who will make trouble and beg for more minutes every step of the way.

    So good job Gar.

Bogans won’t likely see much time and since he seems to understand he’s a role player at best I think this will work. Yeah, nothing to get excited about, but at least they didn’t sign a potential cancer a la TMac. Now that our roster is finally set I look forward to going into this season. I think this may be the first year in a long, long time that we break .500 on the circus trip, haha.

Rosters are interesting, Miami has 17 players on their roster. The Celtics have 16 players on their roster. Portland has 15 players on their roster. Last season the Bulls ended with 15 players on their roster. I think that come gametime only a max of 13 players can be active, but there may be no limit on how many players can be on the roster. We may see a few more players added to the Bulls roster. Possibly some of the summer league players that caught Pax/Gar’s eyes. There could be the PG, combo G, PF/C etc that various people, including myself have been clamoring for. Let’s remember that the Bulls are adding role players now, someone who can come in and hit a three, play defense for a few minutes, rebound, but for spot play, not significant minutes.

To the people that keep saying he’s (Bogans) your 12th man and shouldn’t expect many minutes is wrong. He’s basically your third PG.

God forbid Rose or Watson get injured, the guy (Bogans) that shouldn’t expect many minutes becomes your backup PG. At that time all Watson/Rose have to do is get into foul trouble for Bogans to see a significant amount of time at PG which is scary.

We could’ve done better than K. Thomas, Asik and Bogans.
I would rather see Shaq on my bench than K. Thomas guarding him.
T-Mac knees are gone but at least he can still shoot and create his own shot unlike Bogans. While in N.Y. T-Mac showed he can still score but his defense was hard to watch.

Overall we could’ve done better than K. Thomas, Asik and Bogans.

I guess every one wants 12 potential starters on the Bulls roster. I see Bogans as a guy who fills a role, spot-up 3pt shooter (35%), and spot defensive player, maybe 3-10 mpg. I do not see Fernandez or TMac being willing to fill this role, which would be a potential roster disruption. Any additional players added to the roster can only expect 3-10 mpg at best. Finding someone who has the mind set and skill set to fill those roles is more important than the names of those players. It is something that Jerry Krause did well, and if past is prologue so does Pax/Gar (Miller, Salmons, Warrick, Murray, etc.).

Bogan being signed is good for just having role players but also tough solid defender who will not be pushed around if we are the bulls then we must be able to bully teams simple and to the point. luvabullnj August 9, 2010 at 9:42 pm #

Ho Hum. Not too crazy about the Bogans signing at first. There are too many fans out there that are looking at Bogans as a 12th man and therefore okay with it. Bogans is the 12th man added to the roster, but he is not the 12th man in the rotation. I see him as the NINTH man in the rotation ahead of Thomas, JJ and Asik. In no particular order Taj, Korver and Watson are the 6th, 7th and 8th men off the bench.

That said, on second look I’m satisfied with the Bogans signing as it balances out the second unit. So we have good balance on both the starting and the second unit. With Rose, Boozer and Deng carrying the offensive load with Noah and Brewer providing the defensive balance on the starting unit. On the second unit, we have Watson and Korver providing the offensive punch while Taj and Bogans provide the defensive balance. I see JJ, Thomas and Asik getting minutes only in blowouts and/or foul trouble situations, at least early in the season. Hopefully Asik and JJ develop enough to become productive as the season progresses.

As far as depth is concerned, on paper we appear to be deeper in the front court and not as deep at the guard spots until you realize that Asik and Thomas (I’m expecting a big drop off in Thomas’ production) are not rotation players. Thomas’ minutes and production have declined precipitously since the 05-06 season when he left the Knicks. So the Bulls PF/C rotation is only three deep with Boozer, Noah and Gibson. With Deng occasionally at the PF in a small lineup as he did last year. Deng and Korver at SF with Brewer and Bogans covering in case of injuries. At the guard spots the Bulls are five deep with Rose and Brewer starting and Watson and Bogans on the second unit with Korver filling in at SG depending on match ups.

Thus with the versatility of the Bulls roster, we are three or four deep and solid at the PF, SF and SG spots. But only two deep at PG (Rose, Watson) and only one deep at C (Noah, and not ready for prime time Asik). I would also like to see JJ get another full year to develop before the Bulls give up on him, after all, they gave Tyrus almost four. I am still hoping that JJ could turn into a point/forward which would give us some added depth at the PG.

There you have it. This is why as presently constructed, the Bulls need to add another Big Man more than another PG at the 13th roster spot.

Of course the Bulls could add both a big man and a PG and make all the fans happy by carrying a 14 man roster. LOL

    Sam Smith 😉

Completely agree with bullsfandom. Bogans is the Bulls twelfth man. He’s basically never going to get more than 10 minutes a game. It is better to have a less-skilled player that understands his role than a malcontent with talent. Chemistry matters, and I don’t see T-Mac or Fernandez accepting few minutes graciously.

  17. michael.bae@gmail.com'
    BullsAllTheWay August 9, 2010 at 10:21 pm #

I agree with everything luvabullnj said except I think you undervalue thomas. Although his regular season stats have dropped off, he proved that he can still be productive, as last year’s playoffs showed, when he was an effective starter. I actually think he is a perfect backup center for us, as he can provide leadership, defensive toughness, and a solid mid-range jumper, which is all you need from this position. Asik will probably be the garbage time big man, but for a 3rd center, he has a lot of promise, as Hollinger is very high on him and said to not sleep on him. I think our team is very well-balanced and versatile in the back court and front court and am very happy with what management has done. For all you people who want shaq and tmac, this is a new era, those guys are past their primes. They don’t fit our team philosophy and would only disrupt the chemistry of a great bunch of guys. go bulls.

Bogans is a great sign. He is not going to complain about his minutes.
Rudy most definitely will complain about playing time. He would not be playing as much for the Bulls as he is now and he is already complaining.
TMac would be a horrible addition….he shoots more and worse than Bogans, plays no D, and will complain about his playing time.
Bogans will not be expected to play point guard…and your right…it will be a nightmare if Rose goes down but CP3, Rondo, and Dwill are not available for our backup point guard.
This is another quality pickup. Not many teams have a 12th man that started the majority of the time for a contender last year.

    Mr. McHale:

So how does that Hinrich Trade look now that the dust has settled?

If the Bulls could get into their Hot-Tub Time Machine and go back a couple months, would they have made that trade again? Did 8million (or whatever Kirk was owed this year) in cap-space pay itself off?

  20. pc_eclipse@yahoo.com'
    Savage August 10, 2010 at 1:27 am #

Yes trading Hinrich was definitely worth it. I liked Kirk don’t get me wrong. But he is due 9 million this year and 8 million next a total of 17 million in two years (for a backup). For the price of him we were able to get Brewer and Watson. I would take that trade off any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Plus we traded a bad contract meaning it is hard to trade players like Hinrich when many of the other teams think you overpaid for him. We replaced him with multiple low budget talented easy to trade assets. By trading Hinrich and not getting any salary back in return it gave management the flexibility to sign Boozer, Brewer, Watson, Korver, Asik, Bogans and to still have some change left.

  21. RastaBull August 10, 2010 at 1:33 am #

I’m excited for this year. The Bulls obvious Achilles heal is a proven starting SG that can shoot the three at a high clip. Unfortunately it became pretty clear the Bulls were not gonna find that these last two weeks, I am very glad for what they have put together: it makes them a very competitive team THIS YEAR. Moreover, there’s still opportunity to grow. Will the Bulls be able to spend a mid-level exception next free agency?? If so there’s a chance to land that piece with someone like JR SMITH, SHANE BATTIER, MARCUS THORNTON, KELENNA AZUBIUKE. One of those guys are more likely that piece that turns this roster into a possible favorite (especially if we could add it while keeping Korver, Brewer, and Watson here as well).

I hope with this Bogans signing will get to see fa lot of CJ. I don’t think Bogans will average more than about 8 min per game. If Brewer gets around 25 min, then Korver and CJ should both be able to get at least 20 min. I really like how explosive CJ can be, I’m hoping he really breaks out, especially in situations playing the SG while Rose is on the floor (I think that line-up could dominate with any Deng/Brewer/Korver out there with them).

Watch out for the 2012 playoffs. Give this team basically two complete seasons to gel together and under Thibs system, and add a big threat at the SG…they’s easily be in the Title question.

    one love

I agree with most of you positive people, thinking this was a great move by the Bulls to sign Bogans.

Look u negative people, he is the 12th man on this roster, meaning he won’t get that much minutes and if he does he can handle it. Remember he is a veteran guard that understands the game of basketball with winning teams!

If he was a low draft pick rookie, D-league player or a un-drafted player I would be more worried to see him play for one of our injury guard.

As for Rudy, I can care less right now if we get him or not in a trade deal. As long as we don’t give up Gibson and any other player expect J.J and maybe our 1st round draft pick I am fine with that move.

All we need now is another PG (john lucas III) and big guy (chris richard) (for you boppinbob lol) who the bulls can sign from their summer league roster. And once again, these players won’t get that much minutes or play probably!!! lol.

Hey DJ, now regge is pushing for a big. If we are worried about cap space go for Louis Amundson or Patrick O’Bryant, if not go all in and go after Josh Boone. Offer him a 1 or 2 year deal. The small luxury tax would give plenty of time for Asik to develop without pressure. Thomas could then be muscle off the bench.

@Savage, I agree with you, I will miss Capt. Kirk. But what Pax/Gar did with the cap space has more than off-set my disappointment in seeing Hinrich traded.

@Gerardo, I think you are forgetting about Korver, he will be the first SG off the bench. He may get some time at SF, (like Deng will get some time at PF) but he is primarily a SG, and has been his entire career. I believe he is the spot-up shooter the Bulls have been missing. With Noah and Boozer down low, Rose slashing to the rim and Korver (.536 3pt) and Deng (.386 3pt) spotting up, that could be fun. I wish it was the end of October.

Jeff Van Gundy is a moron. First he said that the Heat will break the 72-10 Bulls record (uhm, No Jeff), and then when someone asked what he thought of the 2010-11 Bulls he said that they have improved a lot but are not in the Eastern Conference Elite yet. He says they are only good enough to be the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th seed. WHAT??????????? Our team last yr was the 8th seed and if it weren;t for injuries to the top four players on the team AT THE SAME TIME OF THE SEASON (resulted in the 10 game losing streak) then they would have posibly been the 5th seed. So Van Gundy is pretty much saying last season’s Bulls with a weaker coach, no post presence (we got Booz this yr), and no 3-pt shooting (we got Korver this yr), and not the same depth (we are very deep this yr) will be better than the 2010-11 Bulls? No wonder why he got fired in Houston.

I think as someone else said the Bulls are set up to be a Title favorite in 2012, no later than 2013, but they will be a sleeper in 2011. I mean really maybe we will be like the 03-04 Pistons. We got Rose as our Chauncey but Rose may be even better than Chauncey or at least have a higher ceiling. Brewer is our Tayshaun Prince shut down defender. Deng moves constantly without the ball on Offense like Rip did and he can knock down the mid range Jumpers, Boozer is our low post threat like Sheed was for them, and Noah is a more athletic and taller version of what Big Ben was in 04, and both teams have good players off the bench to give depth.

    @ Boppinbob

Once again, we don’t really need another dominate big guy like: Josh Boone.

Like I keep saying thousand times, their is a reason why the Bulls finally decided to bring in Omer this summer.

So he can actually play real minutes in the NBA behind: Noah and Thomas not in the D-league were he won’t improve much. Remember, he needs to get his hands dirty, that way he can learn how to adjust his game. It’s like teaching a kid how to ride a bike.

The Bulls GM’s see something we don’t see in Omer, regardless of the videos you saw from him getting beat up by a small guard. Just have some faith in him! FOR GOD SAKES!

And trust me Deng will get some small minutes playing the PF position depending on the match ups, as well as Gibson playing some small minutes at the Center position.

Korver on the other hand has also played the SF position, so don’t be surprise if you see him backup Deng.

If anything the Bulls should invest the rest of their money on signing a TRUE PG passer like: Rafer Alston, Earl Watson or Jamaal Tinsley and sign Chris Richard or Louis Amundson to a small one year deal (happy?lol)

    Starter:
    PG: D. Rose
    SG: R. Brewer
    SF: L. Deng
    PF: C. Boozer
    C: J. Noah

    Bench:
    PG: C.J Watson
SG: K. Korver or J. Johnson
SF: J. Johnson or K. Korver
    PF: Taj. Gibson
    C: K. Thomas

    Backup Players:
    PG: Rafer Alston (hopefully)
    SG: K. Bogans
PF: C. Richard (He comes out cheaper then Louis Amundson)
    C: O. Asik

The Pistons and McGrady came to terms on what Pistons officials believe is a low-risk, high-reward proposition: McGrady, 31, a full year removed from micro-fracture surgery on his left knee, will play for the NBA’s veteran’s minimum.

After saying all the wrong things and turning off the Chicago Bulls, McGrady sold the Pistons on his willingness to play whatever role asked of him off the Detroit bench, sources said.

    Once again, Bogans isn’t your 12th man, he’s your 3rd PG/SG.

Any injury to any guard would result in Bogans becoming the immediate backup and that is a scary thought.

You mean to tell me we couldn’t do better than K. Thomas, O. Asik & K. Bogans.

So when Noah gets into foul trouble in Orlando, we have to watch K. Thomas/O. Asik vs. D. Howard.

Yes, we have made upgrades but I still see major holes at the C/PG positions.

    @ Lobos,

Look dude, 1st of all relax! we are still not done completing our 13 man roster. We still need 1 more guy to add and hopefully it will be a real PG like I mention already.

Another thing, If Noah gets into foul trouble we have good players to backup him up with Kurt Thomas and Omer Asik.

Thomas is a strong physical player that does not let nobody push him around and he is a veteran player that knows how to play with the best big guys in the NBA.

Omer Asik in the other hand, he is not a strong dude but, he is a good shot blocker and scorer.

So we will be fine, if not we still have the trading deadline of 2011 to make another big move.

In my opinion, we don’t have good players backing Noah at all. I posted in prior comments that we should have gotten J. McGee back in the Hinrich trade. The potential/upside on this kid surpass anything Thomas or Asik bring to the table.

Everybody seem to have forgotten what happened when Noah was injured with plantar fasciitis and somehow you think we got better by dropping B. Miller and adding K. Thomas, LOL!!! And why are talking about Asik like you watched him play. I’m pretty sure you saw the same highlights/clips that I saw and they were not impressive at all.

    Game flow is underrated.

@LOBOS, I agree with you, see my earlier post. The C position and PF depth are major issues that have not been fully addressed. My guess is that the Bulls will have between 14 and 16 players on the roster, and the schedule will determine who will be activethe active 13. It will be interesting to see how the Bulls finalize their roster, if that term applies.

WOuld you guys chance on signing Jerry Stackhouse? He will NOT mind bench play at all as he embrace it in Dallas when he was younger and in his better days so obviously at this PT of his career he would take it on the Bulls. He probably can give you 2 out of 10 great games which would satisfy me. And yes I would want another PF/C which is why we didn’t trade Taj for Fernandez (Im glad we did not accept that trade). Who’s honestly out there though?

And why our some of you so set on getting another PG???? First of all our starting PG may move up to being a top 5 player in the league this yr (or very near it and he will be one in another yr or so), and our backup PG would probably start for 75% of the teams out there, so what would be the point of that?

@Matt Steigenga I like Jerry Stackhouse but he’s not much of a 3pt shooter, but he can carry the scoring load for certain stretches of the game in a way that Ronnie Brewer can’t. Maybe, Jerry should have been signed instead of Bogans. With Bogans signing, I think Bulls are satistfied with Bogans being the 3rd point gaurd if worst comes to worst. IMO, Bulls could use another big man for the last roster spot in order to combat the frontlines of Boston and Orlando.

Is there any better C that is available other than Amundson?

I like how everybody act is if injuries aren’t part of the game and foul trouble don’t play a factor.

Overall, are guard situation is looking solid, although I think we could have done better than Bogans but are center position will be are achilles heel.

I hope I’m wrong but on paper it’s obvious where are weakness is.

I truly believe we will beat Miami easily, but I don’t think we match up well with Boston.

    @ Lobos,

I strongly disagree that our Center position is weak right now, with Noah, Thomas, Asik and even Gibson we will be fine.

Even if Noah gets hurt (our strong center piece guy), Thomas can take his place, remember he was a starter before and he is a strong dude that does not get injury easily. Did you not see how well he played in the playoffs against Boston? Well he had a solid all around game.

Plus Omer Asik, will start showing us positive sign in the second half of the season, since he is a quick learner that is why the Bulls decided to bring him. (shot blocker and decent scorer)

Another thing, if we are still weak on our Center position we can always sign Chris Richard to a small 1 year deal, since he did a pretty good job last season for us and he will come out cheap.

What the Bulls need to address beside adding another big guy (which we really don’t need!) is another PG. In case Rose and Watson get hurt. We all know Keith Bogans can play the PG position but, he is not the type of guy that can create shots for his teammates like Rose and Watson can.

That is why I keep saying we should sign John Lucas III since he did a pretty good job in the summer league playing the point guard position or Earl Watson, Rafer Alston or Jamaal Tinsley, since these guys are real PG players! and won’t cost the Bulls that much money since they are old veteran players.
