No real news on the Bulls coaching front

From the ESPN NBA Rumors page: “The Bulls have not spoken with Lawrence Frank yet, but the team is confident they’ll get to interview him for their head coach vacancy. According to the Chicago Tribune, the Bulls have received favorable feedback on the former Nets head coach. The team is in the process of finishing background checks on people they want to interview and they may meet with Thunder assistant coach Mo Cheeks, former Timberwolves executive and head coach Kevin McHale and Mavericks assistant coach Dwane Casey.”

We know Vince Carter has endorsed Frank for the job. We also know McHale has expressed interest in the job. And finally, we know that the New Orleans Hornets have interviewed Frank and talked to Casey and Boston Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau.

Finally, we know that an NBA source told the Chicago Sun-Times that Bulls general manager Gar Forman is looking for a coach with head coaching experience in both the regular season and playoffs.

But that’s about all we know.

I can’t say any of this buzz has me particularly excited. Frank’s record over his final 2.2 seasons (prior to his dismissal after this season’s 0-16 start) was 68-112. In 2007-08, his Nets went 34-48 with a combo of Jason Kidd/Devin Harris (trade), Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson. The next season, they went 34-48 again with Harris, Carter and various other spare parts (Brook Lopez, Yi Jianlian, Chris Douglas-Roberts, etc.). Sure, they didn’t have a ton of talent…but they weren’t exactly overachieving, were they?

And don’t even get me started about McHale.

If the Bulls were going to fire Vinny Del Negro, I was really hoping they were going to bring in somebody who was clearly and demonstrably better. I don’t know much about Casey, but the Mavericks haven’t fared very well in the playoffs over the past four seasons, three of which ended in first round exits.

I still like Jeff Van Gundy for the position, but his brother, Stan Van Gundy, doesn’t think that’s likely.

Well, all Bulls fans can do is continue to wait and wonder.

I don’t want Lawrence Frank..wtf man?! We’ll just be firing him in 2 years. If we go after him then what was the point of firing VDN??

Were f’in retards when it comes to coaches.

Wow- I really wish our front office had a real clue. They keep doing things (getting rid of Salmons, firing VDN) that indicate they have some secret plan and then it turns out they don’t. For instance, we really need a second scoring option next year. Someone who can take the load off of Rose and spread the floor- someone like . . . John Salmons!

Unless they could lure JVG or someone of that talent, why fire Vinny unless it’s personal? It’s hard to root for a team when their management is always letting you down.

Over the past six or seven seasons, the Bulls have generally followed the same pattern: suck out of the gate, start to take off, stumble a little, and blast the end of the season, finishing around .500 or slightly better. In that time we’ve had different players (with some exceptions) and coaches- the only constant has been the front office. That can’t be a coincidence. It’s fun to be the plucky underdog, but it has grown old.

I think the established head coaches (Frank, Scott, Van Gundy) will hold out to see what the Bulls do because they should see that as the best option by far. I could see someone like Casey or Thibodeau jumping on the first opportunity that comes their way. Not that I want him, but McHale will wait to see what Doc Rivers does, because Boston is the perfect job for him. The city loves him, I’m sure the players (more specifically KG) respect him, and Danny Ainge owes McHale for saving his career. Thibodeau may be Boston’s first option, but McHale has to be close behind him. I really don’t want Calipari, because his success has come from recruiting instead of coaching, but considering we need some recruiting this summer, he might get a shot if Pax/Gar truly think that he is their best chance of getting LeBron. Although I think the Cavs hire him immediately after losing to the Celtics, probably before they even bother letting Mike Brown know he got fired.

@ Smith John Salmons never saw a shot he didn’t like and they hardly ever went in!! His ball handling skills sucked(How many times did you see him bounce it off his shoe?) They got rid of him and Ty Thomas to get cap space for this summer!! Wait to see how the summer plays out before you start wishing for Salmons. He didn’t play for the Bulls the way he played for the Bucks. VDN got the short end of the stick. He wasn’t that bad of a coach for a guy with no credentials coming into it but that being said he won’t be missed. Let the summer play out. Lets see what happens before we bash them to hard.

Smith: “… it has grown old…”

Here to the effing Here! We are all Danny Glover …

Max: “…his ball handling skills sucked…”

Here to the effing Here! If I am not mistaken, the miracle running three-ball that Wade hit was after a steal off one of Salmons predictable-a** moves? Right?

We have Luol and his languid ball-handling is enough for the team.

Max, we agree on several things, Salmons does not belong with the Bulls, he had his chance and blew it. And we do need to allow this off-season to unfold before we totally bash management. Who do we get for a coach, and how does he do? What do we do in the draft and FA? I am sure that they will give LBJ and Wade a shot, and miracles do happen. Hopefully going into next season the Bulls will be able to confidently go at least 10 deep.

    Max May 13, 2010 at 8:53 am #

Byron Scott would be ok…First thing I have ever semi agreed with you on DJ. I also have to say that if your dream team of Lee and Gay comes true I will cheer my ass off for them just like I have in my same seats for the last 4 years. But I hope that doesn’t happen. Unlike you I still remember the way it felt for Chicago to have the greatest player in the game. I want that feeling back and I’m sorry but your b-league team just doesn’t cut it. Rose is amazing. I love watching him play, but he can’t do it alone or else they would have done it this year. You just want to swap average for average. I want to see the Bulls become a Dynasty again. Lebron would bring that to the city. Why don’t you want that?

A title-winning tradition like Chicago has always had zero regrets for getting rid of coaches, hey this is where expectations have always existed and this is the NBA’S Cowboys where you go if you don’t win, this is not new york, memphis, toronto or phoenix, nuff said.Another thing the coaching front is nowhere near exciting as a free-agent signing and all we need to do is sign a high-profile free-agent in order for this Chicago team to start winning NBA titles since the greatness they once had in the 90’s.GO BULLS.

The biggest issue I see going into the summer is the potential stalemate (that might have already started) between signing a coach and a big time player. In order to fill the new coaching position, the potential big name / experienced coaches in the running are going to want to know who is on the team a la free agency before they sign on to coach. At the same time, the big name / max-contract players are going to want to know who will be their coach before they sign with the Bullies. What comes first, the chicken or the egg? I feel like we are in a Catch-22.

    Hey Matt,

The media has a lot of influence, as I’m sure you know. Maybe writing some articles begging for Doug Collins would at least help Reinsdorf consider him? He is clearly the best man for the job.

    Bam! May 13, 2010 at 8:46 pm #

Hey guys, I have an idea. What about going for a max free agent AND Raja Bell? Raja Bell is a 6-5 SG who has a .444 3P% and a 1.000 FT%. He plays for the Golden State Warriors. We need a (maybe more than one) guy with a good jumper, and Raja might be able to help fill in the gap.

He has said in interviews that Miami is his first choice team, but maybe Chicago can persuade him… He’s only getting about $5 mil right now, so I think we could afford him and somebody like Chris Bosh together. I don’t know. It’s just a thought…

I’d like to hear what you guys think.

OH MY! LEBRON SOUNDS LIKE A MAN READY TO LEAVE CLEVELAND! Where better than Chicago? He wasn’t really tipping his hand in the postgame interview, but the last question he answered gave us a little clue. He said basically, ‘I will go into the off season with the right mindset, I’m all about winning, I think Cleveland is committed to winning, BUTTTTT I am going to give myself options.’ He left himself that big out, I think that’s the last Cleveland will see of Lebron!

    That’s what I’m talkin about! lol..and it won’t be Lawrence “F’in” Frank!

Instead of Raja Bell..how about Ray Allen? Or Kyle Korver? They’re better shooters than Raja “F’in” Bell

I’d like Byron Scott I think he’d be good and he’d have us playin more uptempo I think..which would fit our guys but if we don’t know Jerry already we should know better than this..it’ll be Lawrence Frank or some up and coming High School coach. Seriously, he’s a cheap mother F’er!

I see another name that DJ is going by. Ok DJ a coach that works well with Rose. I agree with that but with your idea for the bulls he has to be able to coach average never gonna be nothing players like the ones you want. Yes DJ lets fill the Roster with average talent because by the Numbers all that average can equal up to one Superstar. Your Logic is retarded!! A spade is a spade. I go to every home game I can. I want to watch the best talent I pay my hard earned money for on those overpriced tickets!! I’m sure you only go to the games to sit in the 300’s and try to catch a shirt but unlike you I actually like the Bulls and want to see them win Championships again not be the 4 seed like you said you were hoping for with your Lame ass Roster!! By your logic remember the Bulls were done and not making the playoffs. All you do is talk Sh*t and try to downplay everyone else ideas and thoughts. I’m a fan of the Chicago Bulls. I have been my whole life. We had the Best player of all time. Why not go after greatness instead of settling for average. I really do hope He sign with us because I know you will be one of the first people in line for his #6. Talking all that Sh*t but you will be celebrating the rings he can bring to the city or during the parade will you be saying damn man I wish we had Rudy Gay…..

Sorry to break most of you Lebron James lovers out their but, during one of LB interview he said that he is planning on staying with Cleveland if they get him another good talented player to play along side by him. (just like D. Wade.) One of the people from ESPN said it. I think it is not a bad idea to go after David Lee or Chri Bosh. Me personally I would go after David Lee since he is cheaper to get. Then I would also do that trade move that most of you guys are talking about for Rudy Gay in exchange for Deng, with signing 5-6 solid players. Then I would wait and see what better offer are out their before the trading deadline of 2011.

PLus just by getting LB we are not automatically a championship team MAX! We still have to get other puzzle pieces that fix well with Rose and LB which is hard since we gave most of our money to LB if we sign him lol. Plus another I am not sure if D. Rose can work with with LB. Remember both of them like to control the Basketball so that mate cause some problems in late games. While Rudy Gay is more of a caught and shot type of guy that Rose would love to have on his team.

Only Cleveland can offer him more money. So that being said NY and Miami can offer him the same amount as Chicago. Clearly you are just talking to talk again. That’s fine because every comment you leave only makes you look stupid. Chicago has enough to match any offer from Miami or NY or NJ. You talk about knowing everything there is to know but I just taught you about Free Agency and the salary cap again. So yes your kinda a dumb ass.

    DJ May 16, 2010 at 8:58 am #

Damn your right again Max! (god your right! I am dumb!!!) and you want to know what is funny? Miami and especially NY has more money to offer LB a bigger contract then Chicago. If you would have done your research right and check their pay role department of players that they have with huge contracts coming off their books, you would have notice that both of them have more money to offer LB then the Bulls do. And I am sorry my friend but, I am not going to list them for you b-cuz that is why you have the internet for lol.

  45. m_nazabal@yahoo.com'
    Max May 16, 2010 at 9:38 am #

You just made yourself look stupid again. There is a limit on years and money that you can spend on a player. Meaning the most any team other than the Cavs can give him is 19 million and some change per year for a maximum of five years. That means the Bulls can offer him the same contract as everyone else minus the Cavs. The Knicks and Nets and Heat have more money under the salary cap to spend on other players. Meaning the Knicks and Nets can sign two max level free agents. You can’t argue facts. You read and interpret things how you want to see them. That doesn’t make it fact and once again it just makes you look stupid.

  46. mrgar87@live.com'
    DJ May 16, 2010 at 10:12 am #

How does that make me look stupid? am I right or wrong? do they have more money then Bulls that is my question to you? (N stop flipping your words around) Yes they do! meaning if it was a close beat between the 3 of them offering LB a max contract. NY and Miami has the option to go over the salary cap to steal Lebron James away from the Bulls dumb ass.

    DJ May 16, 2010 at 11:07 am #

Not true, so what happens if Chicago, Miami, NY all offer him the max contracts? who wins?

1 option is Lebron choosing who he want to play for
the 2nd option is how offers him a lil bit more money.
