Free Agent Watch: Is Chris Bosh a good fit for the Bulls?

Short answer: Heck yes.

Now for a longer answer. ESPN’s Tom Haberstroh wrote a long analysis of which teams make the most sense for soon-to-be free agent Chris Bosh. Unfortunately, you need an ESPN Insider account to read the whole thing. Here are the Bulls-related parts:

First the set: “Teams with All-Star point guards in the fold will extract the most value from Bosh. In fact, according to Synergy, Bosh had more success finishing the pick-and-roll than screen virtuoso [Amar’e] Stoudemire this past season. Bosh shot a staggering 81.4 percent on field goals resulting from rolls to the rim, a conversion rate only bested by [Dwight] Howard. And keep in mind, that’s without an ultra-creative point guard to distract the defense off the screen. Ideally, Bosh’s future team would also feature an athletic shot-blocker who can flank him inside and protect the rim. The 6-10 power forward will surely welcome the opportunity to upgrade from Andrea Bargnani on that end as he has never had a defensively focused partner down low.”

Hmmm. Teams with an All-Star point guard and an athletic shot blocker…sound like anyone we know?

Now the spike: “Chicago will make a strong run at both LeBron and D-Wade, of course. But should the Bulls fail to land either guy, Bosh would be a perfect fit. In fact, in one way he’d even be a better option, in that he wouldn’t take the ball out of the hands of budding point guard Derrick Rose. Plus, Joakim Noah is exactly the type of big who’d fit perfectly next to Bosh. ‘If the Bulls threw the kitchen sink at Bosh,’ the source said, ‘it would make more sense with the makeup of their team.’ And it would be worth every penny.”

Bosh isn’t a certified superduperstar like LeBron James or Dwyane Wade. Obviously, if the Bulls can get one of those guys, they have to do it. But barring a superduperstar pickup — and we already know Wade is almost certainly staying in Miami — Bosh really is the best possible fit for the Bulls. He can score, rebound and would (unless I’m missing something) probably work amazingly well in tandem with Rose.

I’m not sure I think Bosh makes the Bulls a contender right away, but a three-man core of Rose, Bosh and Noah…that’s a 50-win team right there.

I think he hits on the most important point: the Bulls would do best to make Bosh their FIRST priority. With him, they would have the foundation for an outstanding team.

It would, of course, be interesting to see the Bulls with LeBron, but I’d rather see the new coach develop a TEAM around a group of unselfish players.

Tony C. you took the words right out of my mouth. Kind of reminds me of the makeup of the celtics. Bosh/rose/and maybe another solid sg or deng makes up a heck of a squad.

I will say bosh would be a great addition to the core of the team and would take some focus off of D Rose I am not sure if he is gonna be a bull or not, but if he does come to the team we need him to be a full time player and play through his injuries their is no I in team only what it spells,I am not sure who will land on the bulls team this year but with or without a big name player the bulls will be a force I just hope they keep the team in tact now because the core they have now is headed in the right direction to win a championship. So to the players that say they want to win this is where you want to head all they need to do is sign the paper work when asked if they would like to join our team here IN chi Town. Peace

Thanks for stoking my Bosh-flame. I’m onboard, however the trick with Chris is he will almost certainly need a sign and trade cuz he needs max dollars (LBJ might be the only guy who’ll do a 5 yr deal). So then you have to wait and see how this convuluted love triangle plays out, does Bosh follow a buddy and force the sign and trade to that location regardless of offer (thinking Miami) or does he compromise and take the destination that makes the best offer to the Raptors? I think he’s a wait and see guy that you actively pursue but run in parellel with a very aggressive run at LeBron. I for one am not onboard with the Joe Johnson wooing, think I would rather have scraps like David Lee or David West via trade w/ NO and not tie up max dollars on a borderline all star.

  6. PTFC June 17, 2010 at 4:20 pm #

I still want the Bulls to get LBJ because I feel if the Bulls do that another allstar will follow just because the Bulls picked up Lebron. And this allstar will take less then max money. This other allstar will see Rose, Lebron, Noah and know if they join the squad it will be a very complete championship contending team, from guard to center you would have 4 allstars (Noah is an allstar in my book and will be next year).

James and Bosh should be primary targets…take Wade off the radar. Getting Bosh definitely puts the squad in the 50 win range…getting James as well has the squad playing in June.

But until July, I’ll continue to dream.

Jb called david lee scrapes? one of only a hand full of big men in the game that doesnt need plays ran for them to get there numbers and impact on a game. Lee would be a great option for the bulls if they cant get bosh. i think its to bad that wade is writing off coming to the bulls.a starting five of rose, wade, deng, lee and noah would not only win 50+ games next yr but would be one of the best teams in the nba reguardless of where any of the other free agents land

If we were able to get Bosh and a shooter 2 guard like Anthony Morrow we would be in great shape. I like Morrow because he seems capable of playing D and has size and can hit that three with the best of them. I would be very happy if we got a player like Bosh and then supplemented that with Morrow. Just my 2 cents

    J. Ringo June 17, 2010 at 9:02 pm #

Great comment, Savage. I think regardless of FA pick-ups we need a shooter like Morrow to spread the floor. Morrow is a great option given that he can play D as you mentioned. If the Bulls were able to land Bosh and/or James, an accurate 3 pt shooter is essential.

I have had a FA-theme for the better part of a year.

    It’s simply “Bosh leads to…”

Just fill in the blank (DWADE, LBJ or MELO).

Getting Chris Bosh (via S&T) on July 1 would open the door for the Bulls to also add either DWADE, LBJ or Melo (in 2011).

As I said, if I were the JP or GF this is what I would do.

1.) Move up in the draft by trading Kirk Hinrich and #17 to Indiana for Jeff Foster and #10. Subsequently draft Paul George.

2.) On July 1st announce a S&T for Chris Bosh. Most likely the Bulls would have to give up Taj Gibson, Charlotte’s #1 Pick, Omer Asik (Hedo Turkoglu’s friend) and hopefully the expiring contract of Jeff Foster. Maybe they throw-in CASH or other future considerations as well.

#3.) Sign either DWADE or LBJ.

#4.) If DWADE or LBJ say no, then go after Melo in 2011.

#5.) Have Tom Thibodeau hire Mo Cheeks, Ron Adams and Scottie Pippen for his staff.

That should be the plan for the Summer of 2010.

D Wade The best option he a proven championship an he fills the biggest hole at sg i like hinrich but hes not a full timer anymore we get bosh thats take minutes from gibson who looks like he could be a goood player and lbj puts deng on the bench so it makes more sense rose wade deng gibson noah

  14. BigWay@cox.net'
    BigWay June 18, 2010 at 4:17 am #

If we can use Dung in an S&T for Bosh I am all for it.

If we cannot acquire Bosh via S&T then I say go after Lebron first and worry about power forward later.

There are a number of guys who can give you what Bosh gives you, there are only 2(maybe 3, maybe) guys who give you what Lebron does.

Bosh is no better than a #2 complimentary guy much like Gasol, and I really doubt that Rose will ever be a #1 either, so we will need a #1 sooner or later.

By the way if we get only Bosh, and you are satisfied with 50 wins then Bosh is a bust. That team should win 55-60 and at least play for the conference championship.

I also agree, 1st I would go after a top super star player this summer like Lebron James or Chris Bosh and if that plan fails in 1 month then, I will go after a semi-stars players like: David Lee, Rudy Gay, Anthony Morrow, Channing Frye or Luis Scola. Since these players are RESTRICTED and UNRESTRICTED free agents for 2010.

Wait a min bigway I cannot and will not let you throw D rose under like that he is already a number one also he has done so much in so little time unlike CB4 that you say is a good number 2 pos number 1 dRose is a budding superstar if there are any people that do not think so you best check his facts I am not speaking of just potential on the upside. So get it right who ever comes to this team best come with mindset they will share the spotlight and the ball with D rose a true beast and growing not only in his game but also in the league standings as being an elite player he will demand max dollars in the coming years he was not a number one bust he has been everything short of superb so get on board when you speak of Rose . Peace

  20. jsmooth June 18, 2010 at 4:54 pm #

After Jordan left, the best fa we ever picked up was Ben Wallace..which turned out to be a bust. Although Lebron is the best available player, we should focus on Bosh. If we can sign Bosh, Wade or Lebron might feel compelled that the bulls can win a chip if they sign as well.. You already have an all-star in Derrick Rose and two legit starters in Noah and Deng. Add Bosh and Wade/LeBron, you have the best starting five, and possibly the best bench led by Hinrich and Gibson.

  21. contrerasadvocates@yahoo.com'
    Savage June 18, 2010 at 5:21 pm #

I have to agree with reggie on this one. Rose is improving each year and to say he is not capable of being a number one type of player is not accurate. Rose is so young yet so good already. I just can’t wait to watch him develop into a very special player..

  22. jimmycallahan@gmail.com'
    JC June 18, 2010 at 7:49 pm #

#1 Wade will not come to Chicago, nor should we want him after the way he’s trashed his hometown. He’s always injured and will take the ball out of Rose’s hands.
#2 Rose might not be a “#1” player in the superstar sense, but that’s because PGs don’t typically achieve that level of success since they’re running the offense and facilitating others. However, if you count out his talent and don’t think he has the ability to be a “#1”, then you are mistaken. Rookie year, he could drive and that’s about it. Soph year, he was killing with mid-range jumpers that he worked on in the summer. This year, he’s going to develop his 3pt shot, and then he’ll be even more unstoppable b/c not a single person in the NBA can guard him off the dribble already…add to that defenders having to respect his 3pt shot, and it’s over. He’s already one of the best finishers in the game. Next year, people will call him the best PG in the game.
#3 Get Bosh first, worry about LeBron later. First and foremost, we need an inside scoring presence. We have NO ONE on block who can score. Noah is great, but he should be this team’s version of Rodman. I love Taj, but he should be our big off the bench. You have Bosh scoring on the inside, it opens things up for our perimeter players. If the Bulls go after LeBron first, I fear they’re going to spend the entire summer courting him and all that crap, only for him to sign with Cleveland in the end, and we’ll have missed out on all the other free agents. Remember how Krause embarrassed the team in 2000 going after McGrady, only to end up with the scraps of free agency? Let’s not have that happen again. We have a great young core. We need a post player – Bosh. We get him, and maybe LeBron sees a championship in Chicago. Since LBJ showed this postseason that he doesn’t have that killer mentality like MJ or Kobe, maybe the combo of Rose/LBJ would be the perfect compliment & killer.

Do you really want that kind of guy making the most money on your team? He has been in the league seven years, has he ever made the playoffs? I know D-Rose put his team on his back and fought for it his second year in the League….Has anyone seen Bosh do that? Bosh is and should definitely be the Bulls 1st priority. This last finals shows that size matters and with a player like DROSE, Bosh would only make the game easier for him and vice versa Sign Bosh and find the best affortabe SG you can find. Sign and trade would only hurt the Bulls depth. With a starting line up and bench players like this, Bulls will be really tough
Rose, SG, Deng, Bosh & Noah
Hinrich, Gibson, Johnson, Rookie & Free Agent signings.

  25. BullsFan22 June 18, 2010 at 10:18 pm #

Ok, I know I am changing my style here, but what about Lebron? Have we given up on him? Rest assured though, what we get, no matter what we get (and I believe we will be happy with what we get) the Bulls will be a contender for many years to come. The core that we have was good enough to trouble many teams. Let’s not forget, these guys were well on their way of getting a higher seed and a sure bet to make the playoffs before injuries came in early March. If healthy, these Baby Bulls are a tough nut to crack! Once we get one or two real good players and even a good reserve that can shoot from the outside, we will be up there contending for a title right away! GO BULLS!

And most of us will PASS with your dumb ass idea with adding: JOE JOHNSON OR AMARE OR LOOZER Max!

I strongly disagree with you, 1st of all his team gave-up on him by having a shitty season. If he gave up on his team like you say he did? then why was he averaging 24 pts, 10.8 rep. and 1 blk throughout the hole season and he was their All Star player? and he only miss 1 week of the regular season at the end of April? In other words he got tired of doing all the dirty work and made his team work harder to keep him by testing them out if they can get him to the playoffs without him which they didn’t.

    BoppinBob June 19, 2010 at 3:56 pm #

In order to be an improved team next year the Bulls need to add a starting and backup SG, competition for Gibson at PF, two backup C’s (at least one young and athletic), a backup SF, a swing forward, a backup PG and a swing guard. This assumes that the Bulls keep Rose, Noah, Deng and Gibson, and use Johnson and Hinrich in trades. I believe that LBJ, Wade, and Amare will stay put. Bosh will go to Miami or NJ, Johnson will go to NJ or NY. Boozer will go to NY. The Bulls need to add 7 to 9 players to their roster via the draft, FA and trades. #to 4 of the added players will ned to be quality players for the Bulls to continue to improve. One or two superstars will not get it done. You still need quality players to come off the bench. In order to get the superstars the Bulls would have to give up between 2 and 4 of the players on their current roster. That would leave them with 4 to 5 players on their roster and will need to add 3 to 5 more quality players to continue their improvement. I do not think getting superstars is the answer. The Bulls need 2 SG’s to battle for the starting spot, competition for the starting PF, a solid SF backup, 2 backup C’s and a backup PG. That won’t happen by adding one or two superstars.

  31. cmduignan@comcast.net'
    Chris D June 19, 2010 at 5:00 pm #

Boppin… you’re crazy if you think the Bulls NEED all of that to be a contender. They need to fill out the roster, but realistically the best teams only play 8 players in a regular rotation.
If they get Bosh or LeBron they are definitely a top 3 team in the eastern conference. Maybe the #1 team.
Let’s see what happens with potential trades to pick up talent or clear more cap space around the draft. If we stand pat, I think the Bulls make a run at LeBron (with a time limit for an answer) then move on to Bosh. Simultaneously they should be looking at trades (David West?). The Bulls definitely need at least one of the top shooters, but aside from Joe Johnson there are a nubme of them possibly available.. Morrow, Reddick, Korver, etc…
If the Bulls trade away Deng and/or Hinrich for cap space they’ll likely go after LeBron AND Bosh.
There are plenty of “lesser” players that would also help the Bulls improve (via FA signings or trades)… David Lee, Monta Ellis, David West, Kevin Love, Rudy Guy, Boozer, etc…

  32. BullsFan22 June 19, 2010 at 6:09 pm #

The question with Bosh is how much does he want it? What will his defense be like? I agree with some of you on here that have suggested we also need to have a good draft and moving some pieces of the puzzle around to accomodate for what we already have and likely won’t move away. A big, physical player that can also pass the rock, a swing man, an outside shooter and another backup. Obviously the 7-8 star FA that are available should be one of the first things the Bulls should look at and go for, but it doesn’t end there! We need to build on top of the solid foundation we have right now! GO BULLS!

I agree, their is nothing wrong with adding 2-3 semi-star players and 4-5 quality players to fill in our roster this summer. Who knows, maybe 3 or 5 of them mate be key role players or great backup bench players in case someone gets hurt with an injury next season.

I think adding 1 or 2 All players like: Lebron and Bosh with adding garbage won’t get us a Championship title. Since we will have a limit of money if we sign 2 max player, leaving us no choice but, to sign garbage players to fill in our roster.

Bosh would be an amizing fit for the Bulls. Now, taking the talks into another direction and quite possibly a far fetch scenerio…let’s think about if, and I emphasize on the IF, can do a sign and trade with the Bulls to give up Deng to the Cavs to clear some more cap space…the Bulls could land both Bron Bron and Bosh. Think of that, Rose, James, Bosh, and Noah in the starting line up. You are talking about a Dynasty right there. This, again, is far fetch, but not impossible. James and Bosh would most likely have to make less than they would want, but the endorsement deals would definitely make up for it. July 1st is going to be one of the most exciting starts of record NBA Free Agent summer. Go Bulls! We have to get LeBron Bron!

  35. roho June 19, 2010 at 11:37 pm #

I think we need to get James the Lineup would be Noah Gibson Deng James Rose. Its would be a tall team and we could get the the championship . Wade would be a good sign too. Gibson is a star in the making. Thibodeau is a defensive coach. He doesn’t need bosh, they need guards and I believe it would be best if we get James or at least Wade because we need young defensive people

First of all DJ I have never said they should get Joe Johnson or Amare, I said that would be the worst case scenario. I have never said Boozer!! And for you to say Chris Bosh was testing his team to see if they could get to the playoffs might be the STUPIDEST thing to come out of your mouth yet. Are you F-ing serious? What planet do you live on? What kind of Pro athlete would test his team with the Playoffs on the line. He has no heart and that is why he acted like a Vagina and quit on his team. Stats don’t make a player great DJ. Those stats didn’t lead his team to the Playoffs neither did your boy David Lees or Rudy GAY GAY. You should just shut up when grown folks are talking. OK MAX? SO now it would be the worst case scenario if we get Joe Johnson or Amare, when you said earlier “you would love to have Joe Johnson or Amare in case Lebron James does not come to Chicago.” Like I said b4 and I am the guy that love changing my own stories around? isn’t that funny? (You are a sad lil man MAX, seriously get a live you 40 year old virgin lol.)

And I don’t give a rat ass of what Chris Bosh did to the Raptor rather if he was a loyal guy or not. He has his reasons of what he did, basically he was unhappy. I still would love to have him on our team over Lebron James.

If you think about it MAX, what are the Bulls really missing throughout most of their seasons? when they traded away Elton Brand? Lets Think? ummm………..??? (HINT: A LOW POST SCORER DUMB ASS!) THAT IS WHAT THE BULLS REALLY NEED!!! MORE THEN A SG or SF! So what planet are you live on? that you still can’t see that!!!

As for David Lees or Rudy GAY they are awesome players, so shut your mouth about them. For example look at what Pau Gasol did for the Lakers, at first he was a nobody like David Lee and Rudy Gay and now he is a winner with the right team. And I think David Lee and Rudy Gay mate be the right guys for the Bulls.

I think DWade Is doing this to prevent Lebron from coming to Chicago, because he Is jealous of the potential he and DRose could bring, and he does’nt wants to be left out beacause he had a chance to come.

  43. Raevyrn June 20, 2010 at 11:08 pm #

If I recall correctly Reinsdorf said he would be willing to go over the salary cap if he believed we could assemble a championship team. Is this correct? If so does anyone know by how much? I really have no idea as to how much a deep playoff run earns for a team to offset the luxury tax.

A lot of the comments here seem to say that in the scenario we get Lebron and Bosh or perhaps some other combination of two max players we’d have nothing left over to get quality role players. However if Reinsdorf is willing to go over…

Also what do others think of tabbing JJ Redick for the SG position? Any ideas as to how much Orlando is willing to pay to match other team offers?

Finally no one seems to be saying much about the Thunder, who seem to be one low post scorer away from a truly scary team. They have 12 on tap for the upcoming year and about 16 million in cap space. Anyone know how they’ll factor into this bonanza?

Ok Max, I will show you:

I still hope we get Lebron. If he stays in Cleveland then I guess oh well. The Bulls still need to add pieces. “I would take Joe Johnson but not at a Max Contract.” and Amare then I guess that will have to work.” (your comment BITCHA!)

In other words, you would love to have Joe Johnson and Amare if the Bulls can’t not sign Lebron James. (which they won’t get him) As your plan B I guess?

And trust me, I have a feeling I made you feel stupid for making you search through my old comment to recheck what I said in the past. Remember the past is the past and the present is know! In other words, my old comments won’t help you make a come back at me. (like I said before nice kid!)

To sum it up for you, I still think the Bulls can get good semi-star players with good quality players to their roster this summer, to built around Rose and Noah. I would love to get Lebron James as our PLan A but, for some reason I don’t see it happening.

Now your trying to interpret my words. I said I guess that would have to work? Where do you get “love to have them” out of that? You really are a stupid. Next please.

Lmao..I love the editing by DJ

Btw Pau Gasol has never been a nobody. He’s been a good player, the Bulls tried for him remember? But Memphis wanted Deng, we weren’t going for that..so instead of taking what we were offering Jerry west dealt Pau to LA for a sack of shit (Kwame Brown). Jerry West hook up his former team big time, LA got Pau for nothing.

Plese you know its true MAX, Do you or do you not want Joe Johnson and Amare if Lebron James does not come to Chicago??? That is what I thought! o0o and Trm3-Max if Pau Gasol is a nobody like you say he is then why was he and kobe the only consistent player throughout the players??? (he was averaging a double double) If it wasn’t for Gasol, Kobe would not win his 5 NBA ring. Then again your right Trm3-Max, he does suck because I don’t know anything about B-Ball… It was all Kobe that goes them that ring… lol I am done with you…. (nice try)

Do you or do you not want Joe Johnson and Amare if Lebron James does not leave Cleveland as your back up plan? That is what I thought…

As a Bulls fan we want the best for our future team and we are always putting out ideas of what we think mate help improve this team, rather if it’s getting Lebron James, Wade or Bosh ect. (or a combination of solid-semi-star players.)

As for Trm3-Max what are you talking about that Pau Gasol is a nobody? Did he or did he not win a Championship title with the Lakers this season? If it wasn’t for Gasol double doubles, I am pretty sure Kobe would not be celebrating his 5th championship title. That is how much valuable he is with the Lakers (the right team) but, then again I don’t know jack about B-ball you r right and I am wrong he does suck. (once again, nice try with your no come backs)
