The Bulls took another one on the chin in Atlanta.
You know the story: the Bulls couldn’t buy a shot (36.4 percent), couldn’t hold onto the ball (19 turnovers), couldn’t defend (50 percent shooting for the Hawks), couldn’t protect the paint (where they were outscored 46-34), couldn’t finish in transition (only 6 fast break points compared to 22 for Atlanta), couldn’t even begin to cool down a hot hand (former Bull Jamal Crawford scored a season-high 29 points on 10-for-16 shooting)…let’s face it, the night was nothing but a series of “couldn’t's” for the Bulls.
They’ve now dropped five straight games and nine of their last 10 overall. But hey, at least Vinny Del Negro isn’t worried about his job.
I understand this team is lacking in offensive firepower, but where has the defense gone? In their first 10 games, the Bulls surrendered 100 points only once. At that point, they were ranked a very impressive 4th in Defensive Rating. Since then? Check out the points Chicago has given up in the last 10 games: 108, 112, 122, 105, 99, 85, 101, 110, 103, 118. Now they’re ranked 20th in Defensive Rating. And that number doesn’t even reflect their defensive fail against the Hawks.
Is this really the same team that lit the basketball world on fire by pushing the defending champion Boston Celtics to seven games in the first round of the playoffs last spring? I’m this close from putting a team together to go check their basements for body snatcher pods.
Of course, the Bulls really aren’t the same team. Not without Ben Gordon, not without Tyrus Thomas (who’s still recovering from forearm surgery), not without the Kirk Hinrich from last season’s playoffs. Captain Kirk returned last night, but he must have left his jump shot sitting on the counter at home. In 22 minutes off the bench, Hinrich went 0-for-9 from the field and finished with zero points. The sad thing is, that misguided shooting performance will barely affect his average, which was already a lowly 36 percent.
Vinny might be feeling pretty chill — or so he claims — but it’s become pretty obvious that losing has gotten to the players. You can see it in their eyes, in the way their shoulders slump after a missed shot or turnover. Basketball, especially on the professional level, is a game of split seconds. In most cases, players have a split second to get their shot off or make the right pass, a split second to make the defensive move that will prevent an easy bucket.
Well, the Bulls are losing those split seconds to doubt and depression. A big part of winning is believing you can win. I didn’t see a lot of faith in the eyes of the Bulls last night.
That’s not true across the board. Derrick Rose has finally started asserting himself. He sure wasn’t shy about looking for his offense last night. In fact, he attempted a game-high 18 shots. But even with his newfound assertiveness, Rose wasn’t great (19 points, 7 assists), and his efforts didn’t change the trance-like play of his teammates. They’re called “motions,” and the Bulls were going through them… except for maybe rookies Taj Gibson (who scored 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting before fouling out) and James Johnson (who scored all 17 of his points during garbage time in the fourth quarter).
Even Joakim Noah — easily the most intense guy on the team — looked rattled. Sure, he grabbed his usual 11 rebounds, but he went 0-for-4 from the field and looked totally out of sync.
At this point, I’m not sure how this mess can be cleaned up, short of a major personnel overhaul (starting with the obvious coaching change). The players are having a crisis of confidence. There’s no team identity. They can’t score or defend. There’s no telling whether Vinny has a clear vision — or any vision at all – of what he wants from his squad. Sometimes, he talks about the need for more running, at others the need to “gang rebound.” Well, running teams cannot gang rebound, and gang rebounding teams cannot run.
At this point, the Bulls’ team chemistry reminds me of watching a bunch of guys who have never met playing pickup ball at the local gym. Are these guys incompetent…or incompetently coached? I would be able to tell you more if I got to see more actual coaching. “Run, rebound, and try harder” doesn’t qualify as coaching.
The only real option this group has is to play every game like it’s their last. You know, play defense like their careers depend on it, scrap for every loose ball, hustle with everything they have to give. They can’t wait for next summer, can’t expect a superstar to come and save them from themselves. Why would a Chris Bosh or a Dwyane Wade want to leave their own underachieving team for another one? Wade has already stated that winning is his top priority, and whatever small chance he’d want to play in his hometown will be destroyed if the Bulls can’t start at least competing.
Look, the season isn’t lost. The Bulls are six games below .500, but they’ve recovered from worse. Heck, they recovered from worse last season. But they can’t wait. The turnaround needs to start immediately. One game at a time, playing with wild abandon. If the New Jersey Nets can keep fighting after starting the season 0-18, if the Minnesota Timberwolves can keep competing despite their many woes, then so can the Bulls.
I hope.

I really used to enjoy being a fan of the Bulls, and spending time doing things like reading this blog. Now it is just depressing. I know this is an original idea but how about hiring a coach?
Comment by Dan E. — December 10, 2009 @ 5:47 am
How many more games are the Bulls going to get destroyed in this year before Del Negro starts worrying about his job? I mean, isn’t it obvious to all and sundry that he’s in way over his head? Just listen to him in the huddle when he’s on the mic. I swear, I had better coaching on my 6th grade Catholic school team.
“Keep running! Try and rebound! We need to score!”
It’s utter drivel and it can’t be very inspiring to our team.
This team is like a ship with no rudder or sails. They have no direction and no leader. Any confidence they had at the beginning of the season is completely gone and you can see it in the shell-shocked looks on all the players’ faces.
And with every 30+ point drubbing they take, it can only get worse. Tonight, it looked like the last place any of them wanted to be was on the basketball court.
This team is shot, and barring some sort of miracle, their season is nothing short of over already.
What can we do? I dunno. A new coach couldn’t hurt. I mean, Vinny can’t make shots to in the basket, no matter what he does. But the lack of effort night in and night out is truly disturbing. The Bulls opponents show them no respect at all, and it seems like no one cares. Opponents dancing, tying shoes mid-play with the ball in their hands; it’s total disrespect. This team is a shambles and with Vinny in control, we are really doomed.

I have, traditionally, been very hesitant to get behind efforts to fire coaches. They are not the ones on the floor missing shots. There is certainly some evidence that quality coaches can make teams better, but how quantifiable a science is it?
Does Phil Jackson get this team 20 more wins? Would Mike Shannahan have gotten the 2009 Bears to the playoffs? And how’s that great manager, Lou Pinnella, worked out for the Cubs???
That said, there is too much talent on this team for this “pile of crap” to be happening. Right now there are so many problems with this team that you would think this is a D-league team. …not one filled with 1st rounders! Maybe it is time for the Bulls to bite the bullet and pay for a top-teir coach. They are past the point of rebuilding, these guys need finishing school. It wouldn’t hurt if it was one that Lebron or D-Wade actually wanted to play for, either!
Comment by Brad S. — December 10, 2009 @ 3:35 pm
Vinny D isn’t the problem…it’s Gar and Reinsdorf. Gar has no clue how to trade or pick up free agents and Reinsdorf only cares about his beloved Sox.
The players are doing the best with the leaders they have, one being Rose, trying his best and the other is Deng, oh wait, he’s not really a leader or scorer for that matter. The team is filled with ok college talent (minus Rose), but lacks that one dynamic player to pick them up when they are in ruts like this. Deng isn’t worth is contract and he is showing it this season, letting a second-year point guard run the team.
Upper management let the wrong guy go, in Gordon, and re-signed the wrong guy in Deng. Oh yeah, also, remember when we drafted Aldridge then traded him to Portland for Tyrus…yeah, that was an awesome move too!
All the pieces direct towards upper management not knowing what the heck they are doing. Krause, NOT REINSDORF, drafted MJ, picked up Pippen and let Jackson take the reins. All Reinsdorf has done is cut the checks, and small checks at that. Until Reinsdorf sells the team or hires a GM that knows what’s going on, Bulls will remain a bottom feeders and fans remain ridiculed for a team that is anything but professional. Kentucky could beat them right now….
Comment by Drew — December 10, 2009 @ 3:54 pm
The coaching staff is not the problem, it is the players within the team! For example; we all know the BULLS NEED an inside scorer like Al Harrington, David Lee & ect. The Bulls should have made this deal happen like yesterday for Al Harrington. We all know Tyrus Thomas is not going to become a big time scorer like Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, Kevin Garnett, Pau Gasol & a PF player that I did not want the bulls to trade way when they drafted him LaMarcus Aldridge! PLEASE MAKE THIS TRADE HAPPEN SOON BEFORE IT IS TO LATE and NY changes their minds.
Comment by felipe garcia — December 10, 2009 @ 4:02 pm
What comes first the chicken or the egg?
Do coaches win games or do great players?
They go hand in hand. Great players make coaches look better and great coaches help good players become great.
VDN has not done a bad job with the talent he’s been given, but until there is a true organizational commitment to winning around here we’ll continue to get just enough talent to keep the turnstiles rolling.
Going into this season, the Bulls’ upper management saw last years playoffs effort and somehow become disillusioned to believe that we could lose our top scorer, not make an addition to offset the loss, and manage to compete until the end of the year. All this 2010 talk and anticipation of help coming at the end of the year, is making this entire situation stink around here.
Our players look lost and don’t know what’s going on because night in and night out they go into games undersized and lacking the athletic ability to compete at this level. Furthermore, all this 2010 talk has 2/3 of our roster wondering if they’ll even be here next year. I.E. what’s the motivation? Heart and hustle can only get you so far in the NBA. At the end of the day, you need talent to be competitive. We looked great at the start of the year but adjustments by more gifted teams have helped write the book on our inefficiencies.

This current debacle really started when Jerry Reinsdorf messed up the Mike D’Antoni hiring. Paxson had interviewed him and a deal was all set until JR heard the price tag that was associated with Mike D. He decided then that HE wanted to interview D’Antoni — what kind of owner meddles in his GM’s affairs like that? After D’Antoni had been run out of Phoenix because of “defensive philosophy isses” the last thing he wanted to hear harped on was “defensive philosophy” in an interview (and JR knew that, which is why it’s all he talked about during his meeting with Mike) and subsequently Mike D’Antoni stormed out of the room in the middle of the interview.
JR got what he wanted (a cheaper coach in VDN) and the Bulls were screwed. Imagine how many points per game BG would’ve averaged last season in the seven seconds or less offense. BG easily would’ve put up about 25 ppg! That would have increased his trade value, and made our team more competitive. We could have signed him to an extension and then used him in a sign-and-trade with Deng for a player like Bosh. Then we’d still have Miller, Gray, Pargo, Hunter, Tyrus, Jerome James and Salmons coming off the books in the summer of 2010 to go sign Wade. Imagine a team with Rose, Wade, James Johnson, Bosh and Noah in the starting line up with Hinrich coming in as the 6th man and Gibson being the second man off the bench. We would’ve been instant contenders. Instead, we’re going to stumble through a 30 win season and end up messing up the draft like usual (Tyrus over LaMarcus Aldridge AND Brandon Roy!? Are you kidding me?!), Salmons won’t opt out because of his bad play and we’re going to end up with only about 11 million of cap space (which is enough to maybe sign David Lee). I hope Bulls fans are ready for another decade of mediocrity or worse…
And remember, while we feel pain — JR is rolling in money. I’ll even give you proof:
http://www.forbes.com/2009/12/09/nba-basketball-valuations-business-sports-basketball-values-09-intro.html
If you look at that, the Bulls are second in the NBA in operating income at 51 million — only the Lakers are ahead of them (and the Lakers are only at 51.1 mil, so it’s really, really close) but the Lakers payroll is consistently 10-15 million higher than ours (even in their bad years — you have to pay to be a contender before you can actually BE a contender — that’s just another one of JR’s lies). Why does our owner consistently give us the middle finger?
Check this out:
http://www.forbes.com/lists/2005/32/321267.html
The last sentence under the heading “The Skinny” states, “low payrolls have allowed the Bulls to be the NBA’s most profitable franchise over the past five years.” This article was printed in 2004, does anyone remember what the years 1999-2004 were like? TERRIBLE. We were easily the laughingstock of the league — Dickey Simpkins was our leading scorer one year! Ugh. All the while JR was lining his pockets with incredibly low payrolls while we sat with our hands in our pockets crying as we watched our team get murdered night after night.
STOP SUPPORTING THIS TEAM. DO NOT BUY TICKETS, DO NOT BUY MERCHANDISE. We are like battered wives, and we need to stand up for ourselves.

Fire VDN, hire Byron Scott! I just fixed the problem!
Comment by Luis Rivera — December 11, 2009 @ 3:14 am
If you would have paid any attention to my comments earlier during the summer ‘bullsfan76′, what ever your real name is? YES, I did say the Bulls will be a top 5th seed in the playoffs if their team is; key words, so pay close attention! HEALTHY & DEVELOP. So far they are not healthy and only time will tell if some of their other players will get develop along with Noah that is doing a great job some far. Remember, we still have a long long season and you and your bf mike are giving up on the BULLS? Some true fans you guys are. If you don’t like the Bulls you fakers, then go cheer for the LAKERS or Celtics who have so far the highest chance of win a championship.
Comment by felipe garcia — December 11, 2009 @ 3:38 pm
Man, the Bulls need to make a trade soon for a big man inside. And i total agree with you Luis Rivera, the bulls should hirer Byron Scott! He will help D. Rose become into an ALL-STAR player for sure. Look what he did with Chris Paul, he turn him into a monster point guard.
Comment by mike killer — December 11, 2009 @ 3:45 pm
Hopefully the Bulls will be able to pick up big names for the class of 2010 top free-agents this coming summer like; D. Wade, Chris Bosh, David Lee or Joe Johnson.
Comment by dj — December 11, 2009 @ 4:00 pm
You also may say to yourself ‘mike and bullsfan76′ but, the Bulls only have Tyrus Thomas that is not healthy and Kirk is still playing but, not at 100%. Even if Tyrus Thomas is just one player that is not healthy sadly he makes a big difference to the Bulls team. He gives the bulls a lot more quickness on the floor, brings more DEFENSE and he brings more inside alley hoop Dunks. And let not forget, Rose started out slow this season with an injury on this leg and he is starting to pick up his game now slowly. Like I said before gentlemen, only time will tell what kind of team they will be but, we still have along season to go. GO BULLS!!!

oh my god here we go again dude go away the min someone says anything that you dont like there not bulls fans and bulls fan might not remb but i do and you are realy good at twisting thing around so you dont have to adm your wrong what ever go bulls i hope they make a good trade so maybe we can get some good players to come here and you said garcia that salmons was better than gordan was for the bulls but you will twist that around too bulls fan dud leave him alone trust me he is a big baby trust me i know kirk has not miss that many games plus i will agree with you on this garcia it is a long season but tyrus does not make that much of a diff on this team they should trade him know for al harrington now he would help a little but its clear they are missing gordan salmons is a bench player not a starter and ask rose if he doesnt miss gordan he does and coaching is part of the prob with this team but this current roster is not going to get it done .
Comment by mike — December 11, 2009 @ 11:45 pm
if bulls fans remember they were struggling with Tyrus and Kirk. I would love to see them get a better power forward and I have read that Monte Ellis wants out of Golden State. He is a better player than BG because he can score just as good if not better, and hes a better ball handler than BG was, and a better rebounder. Look Bulls fans I agree with a lot that Blake has said. We dont know in fact I doubt Lebron, or Dwade or even Bosh is coming here Cause Bosh already said he would love to play in Miami with Dwade. I think if we can get good players in a trade like Ellis and Harrington and if we finish the season real strong then I would feel more confident about this team going into the off season. I think Ellis would help D Rose a lot. It would make the backcourt stronger and Harrington cause he can shoot it from the outside and inside well.It would open huge lanes for Rose and company I just dont feel confident that this team is going to lure those big free agents here next summer. hopefully they can make a big trade cause that is the only way we will get big named players here. GO BULLS!!!!

Thank u mike? I mean bullsfan76. Sorry I thought u were the same person talking all that smack lol. Listen Mike, I don’t need to twist things around you just can’t read and understand my comments. Yes, I did say the Bulls COULD be a top 5th seed in the playoffs (IF!) like I said b4, IF! they r HEALTHY & DEVELOP. Do u want me to repeat myself again mike or should I type my comments in spanish? lol. Yes, I did said Salmons is a better upgraded player then BG b-cuz he brings a lil bit of scoring and Great Defense. He is just having a slow start so far but, eventually am sure he will break out of it. And Tyrus Thomas for now, still makes a big difference b-cuz he is a starter and plays more minutes the Hunter & Gray lol. I would have agree with u if Tyrus Thomas does not make a big difference IF! he didn’t play a lot of minutes or doesn’t play at all. I am not going to repeat myself of what Tyrus Thomas bring to the table. I do Agree, it would be nice to see the Bulls trade him for Al or Lee if he still doesn’t pick up him game when he is healthy again. And for the Monte Ellis deal, I dont think it is going to happen b-cuz of his big contact. But I do see the Al Harrington move a possibility b-cuz he is a free agent for next year and can come out from the paid books. So their go and I can say w-e I want just like you told me when you were crying during this summer when everybody was talk shit about you. GO BULLS!!!

Plus you know what funny Mike? you only post comments when the Bulls are not doing well. I have never seen you post any positive comments when they are playing good. Anyways, ill just leave you alone for now Mike b-cuz I don’t want to hurt your feelings and make u cry again lol. The Bulls do need a big man that can score inside like Lee or Al then we are set to make a playoff again.
