While I find this article to be highly insightful and well written, the one clear written error is the statement that Jimmy Butler lacks elite athleticism. Per the NBA draft combine measurements, Jimmy Butler not only has elite athleticism, but in fact has the most elite athleticism for a starting shooting guard if one were to compare height, vertical, speed and bench press in which Butler easily outranks all other starting shooting guards. In fact his elite athleticism is likely what has allowed him to skate by in years past with the exception of his now astounding basketball evolution. Jimmy was being asked to do more and different things this year at the 2 guard, (having been an sf up until this year) then Derrick gets hurt and they trade Luol, so more responsibility and learning on the fly. He already has the ability to drive to the basket and get the foul calls (a great skill – Wade-esque, dare I say) and can guard 3 positions well or exceptionally well. His shot and decision making will improve with time, health and most importantly, experience. He probably would be showing more improvement if Derrick and Luol were still playing for the Bulls this year. He is just beginning to work on being an integral part of the offense and I think he has a chance to become a terrific all-around player. Sky’s the limit if his body doesn’t break down.

While there are some interesting points made in this article, it is astounding that the author fails to mention the likely primary cause of Butler’s regression: injuries.

It should be obvious to anyone paying the slightest attention that the turf toe, subsequently compounded by other issues, greatly impacted Butler’s jumping, cutting and overall mobility.

Feel free to look at his shooting stats prior to the TT injury:

I’d be curious to see how Butler’s stats compare to someone like Paul George’s when they were both 3rd-4th option on offense but integral on defense. Great dissection of Butler’s game though.
