Look out Eastern Conference playoff contenders! The Bulls have signed Linton Johnson to a 10-day contract today. I fully expect the Bucks, Knicks, Nets and Pacers to drop out of the postseason race by this evening, by which time Johnson — who participated in the team’s shootaround this morning — will be cheering wildly from the bench (I’m assuming) while his new teammates take on the Magic in Orlando.
More on the why: According to Vinny Del Negro: “We need another practice body, we need another guy just in case. He can play a little three, a little four. We’ll go with our steady guys right now, and if I need an extra body, at least I have one.” Wow. “…if I need an extra body, at least I have one.” Feel the enthusiasm!
More on the who: Johnson played for — and was promptly let go by — the Charlotte Bobcats earlier this season after logging almost 13 minutes over two games and committing one personal foul. Johnson hasn’t scored a point since March 30, 2008, when he was a member of the Toronto Raptors (for two games). You could probably stamp the word “journeyman” on his forehead, considering the fact that he’s appeared in 143 regular season games for seven different teams. But he’s a warm body, and he’s no stranger to Chicago: Not only was he born and raised in the Windy City, he began his career here as an undrafted free agent out of Tulane, playing 41 games for the Bulls back in 2003-04. And dude is straight up juiced to be back.
“It’s unbelievable. It’s like I was a fan at home and now they’re paying me to play. It’s just a great opportunity. I know we’re in the eighth spot, so I’m just gonna bring energy and do what I can. Actually, I’ve been working out in the Berto Center. I get there like at 6 in the morning and then I’m there at 10 at night. Now they tell me since I’m on [the team] I can come during office hours.”
Linton Johnson is living the dream!
