Boozer needs Korver: Follow-up

Two person +/- comparisons are flawed in some ways, but can be very informative. For another stat backing up the argument, look at the five-man units from Basketball Value.

Two units have played more than 16 minutes during the playoffs for the Bulls: Rose-Bogans-Deng-Boozer-Noah at 102 minutes and Rose-Korver-Deng-Boozer-Noah at 61 minutes.

The starting unit is +3.1 and the Korver unit is +24.5. The starting unit has an off rtg of 97.3 and a def rtg of 94.2. The Korver unit has an off rtg of 128.6 and a def rtg of 104.6. That’s 30% more points scored per possession when he is on the court, for 10% more points allowed.

The goal of basketball isn’t to stop your opponent from scoring, it is to end up with the most points. Thibodeau may be too obsessed with defensive stops and not concerned enough with offensive execution.

Unadjusted, during the regular season, that starters-with-KK lineup was a +10.9, but the DRtg was 111.88:

The variance is too high to send that out against Crawford without wearing him down with other defenders early. I think that’s why that lineup works best in the 4th. If Crawford’s gonna keep defending Rose in the mid-game, even better.

In the two games versus Atlanta, the starters with KK lineup has been +14 versus Atlanta in 22.88 minutes of playing time. 21.28 minutes came against Atlanta lineups featuring Teague, Crawford, and Johnson.

The starters with Bogans are -2 in 35 minutes of playing time. Interestingly, only 7 minutes are against the Teague, Crawford, and Johnson lineup.

Thibodeau is only putting Korver in there against the three-guards line-up. Interesting. Any chance Deng could guard Johnson or Crawford and put Korver on Williams?
