@Matt Mchale... Ben Gordon certainly hasn't averaged 20 points a game for five seasons, so I don't get what you are saying.

"I suggest you make a list of the players who have averaged at least 20 PPG for each of the past five seasons. If you think that’s an easy task, you’re wrong."

Sorry Matt, but that's not a serious argument. Anytime you focus on a single statistic, ignoring the larger context, you're hand is exposed.

BG has scored a fair number of points, and led the Bulls in scoring, mainly because the team has a) been poorly coached for some time; and b) had few other legitimate scoring threats during that period

Furthermore, he has been clearly exposed as a poor defensive player, often makes poor decisions (i.e. plays way too much one-on-one), and is obviously on;y valuable for his shooting abilities. Even those abilities are, however, inconsistent, and it is beyond my comprehension how anyone could view him as a crucial part of any developing franchise.

There are plenty of great athletes who have the ability to be offensive weapons in the NBA. The obvious preference should be for those who can contribute to many different aspects of the game, and be a part of the sort of chemistry which is always necessary in order to go deep into the playoffs.

Ironically, Salmons – who came the the Bulls in serendipitous fashion – is a far better all-around player than BG, and should be way ahead of him in terms of which players to keep.

If the Bulls are smart, they'll let Gordon go, and replace him with someone who may average less points per game, but will be superior to Gordon in every other facet of the game.

For the people who disagree that Ben brings it consisently, I suggest you make a list of the players who have averaged at least 20 PPG for each of the past five seasons. If you think that's an easy task, you're wrong. Particularly for an undersized streak shooter.

Latin_D, yes, Ben was really bad against L.A. Total meltdown.

I like Ben, I really do. But yesterday he screwed the pooch. Some of those TOs were painful to the eyes.I found myself begging for Salmons to get the ball instead, especially because Ben couldn't shoot either.

And then Salmons got a TO. What a game.

All this is great but the reality is bg gives up as many points as he scores. He doesn't t make anyone else better offensively and can't defend his position. He would be a great bench scorer but he want's to start and get paid star dollars. You just can't win championships with a starting undersized shooting guard who can't play defense, while eating up more than ten mil in cape space.

I'm sorry but if you think that Ben Gordon "brings it" every night then you have no idea how to watch a basketball game. There is more to the game than just shooting/scoring. Just ask Allen Iverson(or should I say ask his his teammates), if you don't believe me, and Iverson is(was) a better competitor than Gordon ever will be.

The guy has one skill and one skill only, and "Bringing It" is not part of his repitoire.
As far as effort goes, he is one of the all time biggest quitters that I have ever witnessed.

He is worth keeping as a 6th man/spurt scorer at no more than $1 dollar over the mid level exception, about what the Bulls offered him last season.

When he doesn't get any big money offers this summer and has to come begging back to the Bulls maybe he will finally "get it" even if he will never "bring it"

"...I know BG is streaky and woefully undersized, but he brings it every night, and has been since his rookie campaign."

Sorry, but I disagree strongly. The precise reason why the Bulls should let Gordon go is that he fails to show up too often. He is a consistently a defensive liability, is not a particularly good passer, and plays one-on-one too often (partly VDN's fault, admittedly). While he would be a valuable Vinnie Johnson type sixth man on most teams (including the Bulls), he has never been, and will never be a top starting guard in the NBA.
